Supplier comparisonMealworm and black soldier flyUpdated October 2026
QUICK ANSWERSino Crown differs from most insect protein powder manufacturers in three ways. It processes both mealworm and black soldier fly protein, it mills its powders finely (120 to 200 mesh), and it sells from trial lots to full containers out of Qingdao, China. Large European and Southeast Asian producers offer local supply and bigger contract volumes. The better fit depends on your market, volume and import paperwork.

Insect protein powder comes from a small group of producers, and they are built very differently. Region, species and scale decide most of what a buyer experiences: price, lead time, import paperwork and how flexible the order size can be.
The sector has been through a hard shakeout. AgFunderNews reported that Ÿnsect failed and Agronutris entered a safeguard plan, while Innovafeed and Entobel kept scaling up. For buyers, a supplier's staying power is now part of any manufacturer comparison.
Sino Crown is a Qingdao-based processor that turns yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae into whole dried products, powders, defatted protein powders and oils. Six differences stand out when it is set next to other manufacturers.
Mesh counts the openings in a sieve per inch, so a higher number means a finer powder. A 120-mesh powder passes particles of about 125 µm, and a 200-mesh powder passes about 75 µm. Insect powder contains chitin, the hard shell material, and coarse chitin particles wear on puffing and extrusion equipment. Sino Crown states that its fine grind reduces equipment wear in puffing plants and keeps the powder suspended in liquid recipes such as cat food strips and aquatic feeds.
Defatting works in the same direction. BioMar's trials, reported by The Fish Site in December 2025, found that defatted insect meals gave better nutrient stability and extrusion than full-fat meals. That is why defatted, finely milled grades are the ones pet food and aquafeed formulators ask about first.
Under EU rules, farmed insects may be fed only on products of non-animal origin or a short list of Category 3 animal products, and manure and catering waste are banned (Regulation 142/2011). A 100 percent plant-based diet sits fully inside that rule and keeps mammal-derived ingredients out of the larvae's feed.
The trade-off is the story. Some European producers build their brand on turning food by-products into protein, a model that EU rules limit. A plant-based diet is the simpler route for compliance, and it gives up the waste-to-protein message. Sino Crown does not publish its feed formulation, so a written substrate declaration is the document to ask for.
Innovafeed, Protix and Entobel operate at thousands of tonnes a year. Sino Crown's factory covers more than 4,700 square metres, and its published shipment notes for 2025 include about 6 tonnes of mealworm protein powder to Austria, 18 tonnes of black soldier fly protein powder to Germany and about 15 tonnes of mealworm products to France.
That makes Sino Crown a container-scale supplier, not a contract supplier for several thousand tonnes. For pet food brands, aquafeed R&D teams and distributors, that is often the size they need.
Sino Crown states that it holds GMP+ FSA certification and U.S. FDA registration. The two credentials are often grouped together, but they answer different questions. GMP+ FSA (Feed Safety Assurance) is a feed safety scheme run by GMP+ International, with audits by independent certification bodies, and it covers hazard control, traceability and monitoring. FDA facility registration is a notification: facilities that make or hold animal food for the U.S. market register with FDA, and FDA does not issue a certificate of registration.
BEFORE YOU ORDERA certificate does not replace market rules. In the EU, processed protein from black soldier fly and Tenebrio molitor is allowed for aquaculture feed since 2017 (Regulation 2017/893) and for pig and poultry feed since September 2021 (Regulation 2021/1372), but imported lots still need the right health certificate and an establishment that appears on the official list. In the US, ingredient approvals are use-specific: black soldier fly larvae meal was added to AAFCO's ingredient list for salmonid feed in 2018 (The Fish Site). Confirm the product, the use and the destination together.
EU feed producers that want local supply and the simplest paperwork usually start with a European producer, accepting higher prices and contract-size volumes.
Pet food brands, aquafeed R&D teams and distributors that want finely milled, defatted mealworm or black soldier fly powder in trial lots or container loads, with private-label packs, fit Sino Crown's published order terms. Its black soldier fly oil is available alongside the powders for buyers who source both.
Buyers that need several thousand tonnes a year on long contracts are served mainly by the large industrial producers.
Every buyer should keep a second approved supplier. The 2025 closures and restructurings showed that continuity cannot be assumed.
These checks apply to any manufacturer, Sino Crown included, and they turn a brochure comparison into a real one.
1Batch COA for the exact grade. Ask for protein, fat, moisture and ash, and confirm whether the figures are on a dry or as-is basis. The two can differ by several points.
2Written substrate declaration. It should name the feed ingredients used to rear the larvae.
3Certificate copies. Request the GMP+ certificate and check its scope and validity with the issuing body. For US sales, ask for the FDA registration number.
4Sieve test result. Particle size should be stated as a mesh or micron figure with a test result, not just the word fine.
5Defatting method. Ask how the fat is removed, at what temperature, and what residual fat the batch carries.
6Destination paperwork. For the EU, match the species, the animal use and the establishment named on the health certificate with the official list. IPIFF reports that mismatched certificates are a common reason consignments are rejected at the border.
7A trial lot in your own process. Test extrusion, puffing or liquid mixing before signing a contract, and get capacity and lead time in writing.
What is the main difference between Sino Crown and European insect protein manufacturers?Scale and range. European producers run large industrial black soldier fly plants with local EU supply. Sino Crown processes both mealworm and black soldier fly, offers finely milled defatted grades, and ships trial lots and containers from Qingdao.
Does Sino Crown make mealworm protein powder or only black soldier fly? Both. Its range includes defatted mealworm protein powder and dried mealworm powder from yellow mealworm, and defatted black soldier fly protein powder and black soldier fly meal from larvae.
Is FDA registration the same as FDA approval? No. Registration places a facility on FDA's list, and FDA does not issue a certificate of registration. Ingredient acceptance for a given animal is handled separately, for example through AAFCO ingredient definitions.
Can insect protein powder from China be used in EU feed? The two species Sino Crown processes are both on the EU's permitted list, but each consignment must meet the substrate rules, come from a listed establishment and carry a matching health certificate. Check the route for your specific product and use before ordering.
What minimum order does Sino Crown list? Its protein powder pages list a 200 kg trial batch, with 20GP and 40HQ container loads for larger orders.
Why does particle size matter in insect protein powder?Finer powder mixes more evenly and stays suspended better in liquid recipes. At 120 to 200 mesh, particles are about 125 to 75 µm, which is the range Sino Crown states for its milled powders.
